The Ultimate Stock: Investing In Role Models For A Better Future
In the high-stakes world of investing, financial returns often take center stage and receive the biggest headlines. Yet, when looking back on history, some of our most inspiring visionaries have understood that the most impactful investments aren’t measured in profit margins or market shares, but rather in the legacy they leave behind.
This type of legacy and character is reflected by the amazing work of INTRO DM and its role models. As an organization dedicated to guiding young people toward realizing their value and strengths, INTRO DM has been at the forefront of mentorship and social inclusion. They have laid the foundation for structured intervention programs that promote resilience and positive transformation. Founded by David Martinez, whose extensive experience in youth work spans over a decade, INTRO DM employs a holistic approach, combining therapeutic sports activities with competence development. Originated from a movement called New Page, INTRO DM and its leading role models that include BLNO players have been providing young people with critical life skills to prevent crime, substance abuse, and social exclusion. INTRO DM’s philosophy inspired and seamlessly aligns with the mission of Meteva Sport og Helse and Basketakademiet, illustrating that when young people are surrounded by strong, positive figures, their potential is limitless. INTRO DM’s pioneering efforts set the bar for what has now become a broader movement in Bergen.
Meteva Sport og Helse’s founder, Louise Mohn, has dedicated her resources to this very different kind of wealth—one that pays it forward in the form of empowering the youth, building stronger communities, and creating a brighter future for the next generation. Through Meteva Sport og Helse, Basketakademiet, along with rebranding and contributing both financially and hand-ons with the Fyllingen Lions, Mohn has turned the spotlight on even brighter to the BLNO role models honoring their decade history of being of service.
Recognizing the rise of youth crime in Bergen and the need for support, Mohn has turned her focus to highlighting BLNO players and their dedication to being role models. These role models set the example of what it means to say no to drugs and become a safeguard for the next generation.
"The right role models can change the trajectory of a child’s life," she says. "They instill confidence, teach values, and open doors to opportunities that otherwise might not exist. Working with BLNO role models such as Peter Bullock, Eric Fongue, Bouna Black N’Diaye, Lars Espe and others has proved how basketball is more than just a sport. It can change lives."
The Basketakademiet: A Role Model Blueprint
In the world of basketball, teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship are fundamental values. The Basketakademiet in Bergen embodies these principles, serving as a homebase for young athletes to develop their skills, while forming relationships with role models who inspire them both on and off the court. Founded and funded by Mohn and made up of some of the best coaching talent in the region, the academy is on a mission to create a high-quality, low-barrier training environment where all children are seen, safe, and inspired.
Through seasonal training camps and dedicated player development programs, the academy ensures that young athletes receive top-tier coaching, regardless of their financial background. Special talent programs offer promising players additional training, costing only a nominal fee, with clubs covering the costs of coaches and facilities.
The initiative extends beyond basketball. Aligned with the Norwegian Basketball Federation’s vision that “Basketball is more than a sport,” the Basketakademiet is a vehicle for social change.
Role Models: The Most Valuable Investment
What sets basketball apart from other sports, Mohn emphasizes, is its unparalleled ability to cultivate organic mentorship. Unlike traditional educational settings, where authority figures operate within rigid structures, basketball fosters a culture where professional athletes and young players interact in everyday settings. The BLNO players are mentors, advocates, and community leaders who are actively involved in the lives of young people.
These role models don’t just teach basketball; they engage with young players in their schools, talk with their teachers and parents, and create meaningful relationships. They invite children to games, ensuring that even those who might not have the means to attend on their own can experience the thrill of a high energy game. They actively check-in on young players and teach them about the importance of dedication, integrity, and service to others.
A United Front
To further amplify this impact, Meteva Sport og Helse and Basketakademiet have joined forces with Beredt Inkludering AS, solidifying a shared commitment to strengthening Bergen’s youth environment. This partnership is built on a foundation of:
Zero tolerance for substance abuse, bullying, violence, and crime
Promoting strong values and self-efficacy among young people
Creating inclusive communities based on respect, transparency, and support
"We live in a time when community, safety, and strong role models have never been more crucial," Mohn says. "This is a no-brainer. When you invest in role models, you invest in the future. And that is the most valuable stock of all."
By highlighting the work of role models, fostering mentorship, and prioritizing the health of our youth, the foundation of the next generation is being shaped. It is proving that the best investments aren’t found in financial markets—they are found in people.
